About this activity
Once a year, the waters north of Cancún become the feeding ground for one of nature's most awe-inspiring gatherings: hundreds of whale sharks — the world's largest fish — converging in the Caribbean to feed on fish spawn. This private expedition departs at dawn and takes you directly to where the sharks are feeding. Licensed whale shark guides bring you alongside these gentle giants, up to 12 meters long, as they glide effortlessly through the open water. You'll snorkel directly with them — no cage, no barriers, just you and an ancient creature that has roamed these seas for 60 million years. Seasonally available June through September.

Hotel pickup & marina briefing
Early pickup from your hotel. ~8:30 AM
Open water — whale shark feeding zone
Your private boat navigates north to the seasonal aggregation zone where whale sharks gather to feed on fish spawn. The guide reads the water and locates the sharks. You enter two at a time alongside a guide, slipping into the open Caribbean beside creatures that can reach 12 meters and weigh up to 20 tons — yet move with absolute grace and pose zero danger to swimmers.
~10:30 AM
Extended swim & snorkeling with the sharks
Multiple turns in the water — everyone in your group gets extended time alongside the whale sharks. Your guide captures photos and video from underwater if requested. The boat stays nearby so you can rest, hydrate, eat fruit, and go back in. The experience typically lasts 1.5–2.5 hours depending on shark activity and weather.
~12:30 PM
Isla Contoy — snorkeling & beach
Head to Isla Contoy, Mexico's most pristine protected island and a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. Snorkel the coral reef, walk the white sand beach, and observe the island's remarkable bird colonies — frigatebirds, cormorants, and brown boobies nest here by the thousands. No hotels, no vendors, no cars — just untouched nature.
~3:30 PM
Return to marina & hotel transfer
Sail back to the marina with the afternoon light on the Caribbean. Transfer to your hotel, arriving late afternoon with an experience that will likely rank among the most remarkable of your lifetime.
