About this activity
Kantun-Chi is one of the Yucatán Peninsula's most spectacular cave cenote parks — a system of four interconnected underground cenotes carved over millions of years into the limestone bedrock, accessed through stalactite-hung chambers and flanked by ancient rock formations. Unlike open-air cenotes, these are cave environments where the underwater world glows turquoise, stalactites drip from the ceilings, and the silence is absolute. The park sits within a lush tropical garden, making it a beautiful destination above ground as well. With flexible departure times and just 5–6 hours needed, it's an ideal add-on for any day of your trip.

Hotel pickup & cenote briefing
Pickup at your preferred time — morning or afternoon. On the 30-minute drive, your guide explains the Yucatán aquifer system: a vast underground network of fresh water that supplied the ancient Maya civilization, considered by them to be sacred passages to the underworld. Kantun-Chi sits directly above this network.
Arrival
Cenote 1 — open cavern entry
Enter the first cavern cenote through a path of limestone formations. The cave ceiling opens partially to the sky, letting filtered light illuminate the turquoise water below. Don snorkeling gear and a life vest, then enter the water. Floating in the cave with stalactites overhead and crystal-clear water below is immediately, viscerally otherworldly.

Cenotes 2 & 3 — deeper chambers
Move through the cave system to Cenote 2 and 3, progressively deeper and darker chambers where massive stalactites reach down toward the water and the silence amplifies every sound. Your guide points out geological formations and explains the aquifer connection between all four cenotes — ultimately linked to the Caribbean Sea.

Cenote 4 — underground river channel
The fourth cenote connects to a shallow underground river channel — a rare chance to float through a subterranean passage, propelled gently by the current. The water is exceptionally clear and cool. This is the most dramatic of the four and often the group favorite.

Tropical garden walk & return
Take a relaxed walk through the park's tropical garden — iguanas sunning on rocks, birds calling from the canopy, and lush jungle vegetation surrounding the cave entrances. Then transfer back to your hotel, arriving refreshed and with the kind of underground memories that stay with you for years.
