About this activity
Two extraordinary chapters of Yucatán history in a single unforgettable day. The morning takes you to an abandoned henequen hacienda — a 19th-century ghost town that once produced the rope fiber that made Yucatán one of the wealthiest regions in the Americas. When synthetic alternatives arrived in the 1940s, the industry collapsed overnight, leaving behind an eerie, jungle-reclaimed estate of rusting machinery, crumbling worker quarters, and towering chimneys. The afternoon reveals La Catedral: a pair of extraordinary cenotes where daylight filters through the limestone ceiling in golden rays, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere inside ancient chambers that the Maya considered sacred portals to the underworld.

Day schedule
8:00 AM
Hotel pickup & hacienda history
Morning pickup from your hotel. On the way, your guide tells the remarkable story of henequen — also called "green gold" — and how this single fiber crop made Yucatán one of the wealthiest states in Mexico before the industry collapsed almost overnight when synthetic alternatives arrived in the mid-20th century.
~9:30 AM
Ghost town hacienda — ruins exploration
Arrive at the abandoned hacienda. Walk through the crumbling ruins: towering brick chimneys, rusting rasping machines that once stripped fibers from agave leaves, the hacienda owner's residence now overgrown with fig trees, and the worker quarters where hundreds of Yucatecan laborers — many barely compensated — once lived. An eerie, atmospheric, and historically profound place.
~11:30 AM
Regional lunch at a local restaurant
Enjoy a classic Yucatecan meal at a nearby restaurant — poc chuc (grilled pork in sour orange), panuchos, or sopa de lima depending on what's fresh. Paid separately; your guide recommends the best dishes.
~1:00 PM
La Catedral Cenote 1 — swim & exploration
Enter the first of the twin La Catedral cenotes. Inside a limestone chamber, shafts of golden light filter down through natural openings in the rock, illuminating crystal-clear blue-green water like a sacred space — which is exactly what the ancient Maya believed these cenotes to be: portals to Xibalba, the underworld. Swim and float in the extraordinary light.
~2:30 PM
La Catedral Cenote 2 — the second chamber
The second cenote is deeper and darker, connected to the same underground aquifer system. Its dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, centuries in the making, give it an otherworldly atmosphere. Your guide shares the Maya cosmological interpretation — and the LDS perspective on water as a symbol of covenant and cleansing.
~4:00 PM
