About this tour
Ek Balam — meaning "Black Jaguar" in Yucatec Maya — is one of the most spectacular and least-crowded major archaeological sites in the Yucatán. Unlike the heavily visited Chichén Itzá, Ek Balam's towering Acropolis pyramid is covered in extraordinarily detailed stucco carvings including winged figures, monster mouths, and jaguar imagery that is among the finest Maya stucco sculpture ever discovered. Juan Carlos connects the site's unique iconography — winged angels, resurrection imagery, and the "jaguar throne" — directly to Book of Mormon narrative. This tour focuses entirely on Ek Balam with full depth, finishing with a refreshing swim at the nearby Cenote X'Canché.

Day schedule
7:00 AM
Hotel pickup
Comfortable departure from your Cancún or Riviera Maya hotel. The drive to Ek Balam takes approximately 2 hours through the heart of the Yucatán.
9:00 AM
Ek Balam Archaeological Site
Arrive early to beat the small number of visitors this site receives. Begin at the twin towers that flank the main sacbé (white road), then move to the Oval Palace before approaching the monumental Acropolis. Juan Carlos begins the LDS narrative at the site's entrance, connecting its compact but powerful city plan to Book of Mormon civilization descriptions.
10:00 AM
Acropolis & stucco carvings study
Spend a full hour at the Acropolis studying the extraordinary stucco carvings up close. The main tomb entrance — flanked by winged humanoid figures (often called "angels" by scholars) and a great monster-mouth doorway — is among the most remarkable things Juan Carlos has ever encountered in 20+ years of guiding. His in-depth commentary here is the highlight of many groups' entire Yucatán trip.
11:30 AM
Cenote X'Canché swim
A 10-minute bike ride (or walk) through the jungle brings you to Cenote X'Canché — a hidden circular sinkhole with a wooden platform for jumping and ladders for entry. Crystal-clear green water, jungle canopy above, and usually just a handful of visitors. Life jackets available on site.
12:30 PM
Traditional Yucatecan lunch
A relaxed meal at a local family restaurant near the site with regional specialties and cold beverages included.
2:00 PM
Return drive
Comfortable return to your hotel, estimated arrival around 4:30–5:00 PM.
